Healthy Habits Important During Pregnancy

By Peggy Ussery

So, what should you do if you want to become pregnant or have become pregnant?

In the simplest explanation — eat right, exercise, be cautious with medicine, get plenty of sleep, take your vitamins and no smoking or drinking alcohol. The rule of thumb, said obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Trenace Dubreuil, is check with your doctor about any concerns or before doing anything you fear may put your baby at risk.
Exercise

It’s OK to exercise while pregnant. As a matter of fact, it’s recommended as long as there are no complications during pregnancy. Women should check with their doctor, especially if they did not exercise regularly before becoming pregnant.

Generally, whatever exercise you did before pregnancy, you can continue during pregnancy.

Walking is especially good. Some exercises might need modification during pregnancy. You shouldn’t lay flat on your back after the first three months of pregnancy, and avoid exercises or sports that create a risk of falling. Contact sports should be stopped.

Foods To Avoid During Pregnancy

By Apurva Shree
Do you know which foods to avoid during pregnancy period? If not, then you had better read on. Even if you do know, read on to add to your knowledge regarding the best pregnancy diet.

Raw Meats And Liver

It´s time to avoid raw meats like seafood, sushi, beef, poultry, and others. They pose a risk of toxoplasmosis, salmonella, and E.coli bacteria. Deli meats, which include hot dogs, have resulted in a type of food poisoning, known as Listeriosis, on a large scale. This is specifically detrimental to fetuses. Although the risk is less in deli meats, which to-be-mom would want to risk the life of her unborn baby?

Animal livers are also avoided due to the high amount of vitamin A that they contain. Excess of this vitamin might cause birth defects in your baby. So, it´s advisable to remove liver from your pregnancy diet plan completely.

Fish

Fish containing high amounts of mercury or PCBs (Poly Chlorinated Biphenyls) is sold in many parts of America. Mercury in large amounts might lead to brain damage of your baby or cause delay in the learning processes in your child after birth. In addition to this, it might also lead to reduction in IQ, memory, and concentration in kids.

Post Pregnancy Getting Back into Shape

Post Pregnancy: Getting Back into Shape

Having a baby can change your life and body dramatically, but by taking small steps every day you can get your shape back.

New mothers need a no-fuss plan to take control, without beating themselves up about slip-ups along the way, say nutritional therapist Kate Cook and postnatal fitness instructor Lucy Wyndham-Read, writers of new book An Unfit Mother: How to get your Health, Shape and Sanity back after childbirth. They told us how to do it.

Why is it so difficult to get back in shape after pregnancy?

Kate: Because we get overwhelmed and knackered; we don’t feel sexy; we go into mummy mode; we need lots of treats and we put it off.

Is it more difficult the longer you leave it after giving birth?

Kate: Well the longer you leave anything the bigger the mountain seems. You feel that you may never succeed – but in reality, if you start making really small changes rather that being intimated by a huge health programme, you are much more likely to stick to the small changes and get bigger results

Pregnancy Do’s and Don’ts

By DR. LESLIE BAUMANN
drb@drbaumann.com

Q:I recently learned that I'm pregnant, and now I'm afraid to use any skin care products! Can you give me a quick rundown of the do's and don'ts?

A: Congratulations! My first suggestion is that you raise specific questions with your doctor.

That being said, I can give you a few general guidelines:

Don't use retinoids . Accutane is a pregnancy no-no and it's use during pregnancy leads to birth defects.

Don't use salicylic acid. Instead, substitute products with lactic or glycolic acid.

Do pay attention to changes in your skin's pigmentation. Melasma, a type of estrogen-influenced hyperpigmentation that manifests as brown patches on the upper lip, nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead, is so common during pregnancy that it's often called ''the mask of pregnancy.'' Hydroquinone, a powerful skin-lightening ingredient, is safe to use during pregnancy, but many women prefer to avoid it. DDF Intensive Holistic Lightener is an effective, hydroquinone-free alternative.

Pregnancy Stress, Schizophrenia Linked?

(WebMD) Children born to women who suffer the death of a loved one during their first trimester of pregnancy may be at increased risk for developing schizophrenia, new research shows.

The study is not the first to suggest that a mother's psychological state can influence her unborn child's brain development, but it is the largest, involving nearly 1.4 million Danish children followed for decades.

The schizophrenia risk was still quite small in the children of women who experienced the death of a family member early in pregnancy, and the findings need to be confirmed.

But researchers say the study adds to the evidence that severe stress early in pregnancy — in this case the death of a parent, sibling, spouse, or child — may negatively impact fetal brain development.

"We did not see this association in the months before pregnancy, or after the first trimester," says study co-author Kathryn M. Abel, PhD, of the University of Manchester.

Pregnancy Weight Gain

Pregnancy weight gain is essential during pregnancy. It is critical to the health of your baby that you gain the appropriate amount of weight during pregnancy. Different people need to gain different amount. I am going to break it down as best as I can so that you don't have to guess when it comes to pregnancy weight gain.

Weight gain really differs from person to person. If you start out at a healthy weight when you get pregnant, you should look at gaining anywhere from 20-30 pounds throughout your entire pregnancy. If you are under weight, you should look at gaining a little more, usually in the 35 pounds range. And, if you are overweight when you get pregnant, your goal should be around 10-15 pounds gained throughout your pregnancy.

Safe Pregnancy Exercise

Safe pregnancy exercise of any kind - cardiovascular or strength training - requires extra circulation of blood throughout your body.

As you move, your muscles require more oxygen and nutrients to keep them going. Your blood carries these essentials throughout the entire body. As your muscles begin to work harder, your heart needs to pump faster to keep up.

If you jump right into a workout with out warming up, your heart is not pumping fast enough to the oxygen and nutrients around in an efficient manner. This is especially important for expectant mothers because you need blood not only for your hard working muscles, but for your baby as well.

Caffeine and Pregnancy

New research out Monday may have expecting moms rethinking their drinking habits. A new study has found that pregnant women who consumed more than 200 milligrams of caffeine a day, equivalent to about two cups of coffee, had twice the risk of miscarriage as the women who consumed no caffeine at all. The findings are published in Monday's Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Previous studies have found similar results, but Dr. De-Kun Li, lead author and investigator with the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, is quick to point out the significance of his findings. "We were able to address the issue of if the increase is really due to caffeine or due to women changing their drinking patterns. Other studies have reported the same results but had some biases in the research."

Healthy Mom Means a Healthy Baby

Pregnancy is one of the greatest joys that a woman could ever experience in her whole life. However, it is not an experience that comes without serious responsibilities as well as a lot of fears and worries. There are things that you can do though, to make all these responsibilities and fears less daunting and the most important one is preparing yourself by being a healthy. You have to remember that a healthy mom could very well mean a healthy baby. Because your baby would live inside your womb for nine months and would feed on the nutrients that are already in your system, then if you are already healthy there is really no reason to fret.

If you are planning to conceive, then you already have to take certain measures to see to it that your body is ready for your baby. You can visit your doctor and talk to him about what prenatal vitamins you can take, so you can stock on the nutrients that you and your baby might need during pregnancy. He will probably suggest one that is loaded with folic acid, calcium and iron, which will help in the overall development of your baby during his stay inside your womb. Right at this time, it is better that you are already taking in a healthy balanced diet everyday as well as getting into regular exercises. This way, when your pregnancy test finally shows a positive result, you are well on your way to being a healthy carrier of your baby.
